Picking up a good book can be a great escape from the banality of normal life. And fantasy books to binge-read take it a step further by being an exciting realm of fiction to escape to. We have some excellent stand-alone fantasy books and series that you can spend days enjoying.

From classics and recent hits, we’ve gathered some remarkable fantasy novels that we think you’ll enjoy! Here is a list of some excellent choices to choose from (and don’t worry, we’ve avoided including dystopian future novels):

Harry Potter Series

If you haven’t read this classic seven book series, now is definitely the time. With several thick novels following the life of wizard Harry Potter and his friends as they fight the dark lord, you’ll have many days of entertainment to come.

In this exciting blend of modern fantasy and coming-of-age comedy, Harry Potter lives a relatable yet unordinary adolescence. Some of his troubles are universal, such as love triangles, strict teachers, and obnoxious family members. But then there’s the unthinkable, including monsters, curses, and a tyrant out to kill him.

There’s good reason why this series is as successful as it is. They have unforgettable characters, clever world building, and an endlessly appealing story. Similar to Tolkien’s Middle Earth series, it starts out from a place of innocence, almost like a children’s book. But with each entry, it gets a bit darker, as the students grow older and face more troubles. This is largely why it struck a chord with its audience, as this progression helped young readers understand growing up.

And if you’re still looking for more Harry Potter reads after you’ve finished the series, you can always go in and read the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. There are also little side books to supplement the series. Some of these include The Tales of Beetle the Bard and Quidditch Through the Ages. And don’t forget “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter” at the Universal Studios amusement parks.

Of course, you could also go in and watch all eight movies and spin-offs within the Harry Potter universe such as Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The films were as successful as the novels, largely due to a pitch-perfect cast. Luckily, they rarely had to recast any actors, so you get to see the real people age along with the characters. Please see the original set if you haven’t, as it’s really quite special. And if you already have, there’s always a good time to relive your nostalgia.

The Invisible Library Series

While lesser-known, this series by Genevieve Cogman is a special gem. There are six novels in this series that came out in January 2015 with the first of the series, The Invisible Library.

It centers on a team of magical librarians that collect books from alternate dimensions on high-stakes missions. If you love romance, supernatural elements, and steampunk nostalgia, you’re going to love this series.

Since the start of 2015, Cogman has created and published several more of these fantastic books- the most recent of which was The Secret Chapter in 2019. So you’ll have plenty of content to read.

“One thing any Librarian will tell you: the truth is much stranger than fiction… Irene is a professional spy for the mysterious Library, a shadowy organization that collects important works of fiction from all of the different realities. Most recently, she and her enigmatic assistant Kai have been sent to an alternative London… Now Irene is caught in a puzzling web of deadly danger, conflicting clues, and sinister secret societies. And failure is not an option—because it isn’t just Irene’s reputation at stake, it’s the nature of reality itself.”

The Goddess Test Series

This series by the young adult fiction author Aimee Carter from 2011-2013 is excellent if you love Greek mythology and romance. Carter ties in gods and goddesses with the modern world and gives everything a relatable and exciting dramatic flair.

This series includes several books which include The Goddess Test (2011), The Goddess Hunt (2012), The Goddess Interrupted (2012), The Goddess Legacy (2012), and The Goddess Inheritance. You can purchase the first book individually because it’s a great read on its own. Or you could invest in the whole exciting series!

Shadowhunters Series

Shadowhunters isn’t just an exciting Netflix series. It actually started out as a series of novels. And there are even movies made after these books! So you can spend a ton of time enjoying the Shadowhunters universe.

The series centers on Clary who discovers that she was born to fight demons. This series also includes warlocks, vampires, and werewolves. So you can enjoy all of your favorite fantasy elements as you consume this content!

If you want to enjoy everything in the order that it was created in, read the books first, then watch the movies, and finally enjoy Netflix’s series based on the novels.

The Witcher Series

The Witcher TV show was a huge hit on Netflix when it came out on Netflix. But the show itself is based on a series of books by the Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. (There is also a pretty fun choose-your-own-adventure video game make in honor of this series if you’re interested.)

The books themselves are not in choose-your-own-adventure style. So they’re pretty straight-forward to read, and they make entertaining and quick reads.

“For over a century, humans, dwarves, gnomes, and elves have lived together in relative peace. But times have changed, the uneasy peace is over, and now the races are fighting once again… As the threat of war hangs over the land and the child is hunted for her extraordinary powers, it will become Geralt’s responsibility to protect them all—and the Witcher never accepts defeat.”
